The preschool came over to use for Pasifica time this Friday. They sung a mixture of songs and performed the Tongan and Samoan haka.

We love kiwisport!!!

Our favourite activities from kiwisport with Ata today were sneak up granny and hitting balls with tennis rackets.

Collaborative Art

Today we worked together to create a piece of art. In groups of 3, we each chose a primary colour and used cotton buds to dot paint onto the duck template. We worked together to fill the whole space with our dots.
It was lovely to see the children chatting together, and giving each other praise and suggestions.

A Snippet from the cooking class

How to cut safely...

Discovery!

We live discovery on a Thursday afternoon. A great time for conversations and language building. The hidden magic pictures were a hit in Room 2 this week!

Draw a picture with white crayon and dye over the top to reveal the picture!

Marble run was extreme, some great tracks were made for the marbles this week.

Brianna made a dinosaur zoo. She had to excavate the body parts from the sand to build her big dinosaur.

Cooking Class!

On Thursday we were lucky to be a part of a cooking class. Chef showed us how to be safe in the kitchen and how to make kale and apple crepes! The children  showed get Respect by listening to chef. It was fantastic to see the children taking risks and trying the new food! What a wonderful opportunity for our tamiriki.

Chef Daisy! (She was lucky to be selected as chefs helper)

Daisy learnt to crack an egg!
And wisk
Cut food safely and also to use a grater!

There were mixed feelings about the crepes! Noah loved his, Jaedyn didn't like the green, Sophie said it was delicious!

Mind Ball

We had a great time at Science Alive- Mindball on Wednesday. We had to strap a belt around our head and deep breathe and try to be calm. The calmest person was able to move the ball on the machine and win the game.
It was very interesting to see the graph go up and down and things distracted each child!

Dupree and Jaedyn were the champions! They both managed to keep a very calm mind, Ka pai boys :)

Science Experiments Using Forces

On Tuesday we did our first Science experiment with Room Two.
First Miss Collins told us that we were going to move paint on a page but we
weren't sure how.  We thought we could move it around using a our fingers or a spoon.  Then Miss Collins told us we were going to be given a straw.
Next we formed a question, which was
"How can we use a straw to move paint around a piece of paper?"

After that we formed a hypothesis which is when you predict what you think will happen.
We thought...
- The paint might go all over us.
- The paint might splash off the page
- Paint could end up in our mouth.

After that Miss Collins and Miss Philp explained what we were going to do and
recorded it on our experiment chart.  We wrote it down because that is what 'real' scientists do.

We carried out the experiment and we found out that we could move the paint around the page by blowing down the straw.
The paint was quite thick and hard to move around.
Room One then tried the experiment again with dye which was thinner and it moved around the page more easily.
The dye spread like fireworks.
The air forced the paint and dye to move around the page.

I Like To Move It Inquiry Launch

Today we launched our Inquiry "I Like To Move It!"
Room One and Two got together with their teachers and we talked about what Science experiment that we were going to do.  The teachers showed us the equipment that we needed.  Lots of us didn't realise that there was different kinds of Coca Cola and that Mentos were lollies.
First we formed a question, which was "What will happen if we put a packet of Mentos into a bottle of Coke or Diet Coke?"  Then we made our hypothesis which is when we predict what we thought would happen.

This is what we thought...
- The Mentos might sink to the bottom.
- The Coca Cola might explode out of the bottle.
- There might be fizzing.
- There maybe foaming and it could turn white.
- There might be Cocal Cola everywhere

We went outside and sat in a semi circle.
Miss Philp put the Mentos lollies in the full Coca Cola first.

Here is video of what happened with the Coca Cola...

Then Miss Collins put the Mentos in the Diet Coca Cola.

After the experiment we came and did some wondering and thinking.  We practised asking questions.  Miss Collins wrote them on the window in the Learning Centre so we could see our thinking and come back to it later.  Check out our wonderings...
