In Room 2 we have been learning about shapes. We searched around our school looking for different shapes, especially in the playground. We found triangles, circles, squares, ovals and octagons. We will be learning more about shapes this week too.
Each week we focus on a letter to learn, read and write about.
We do this through phonics, singing, reading stories, handwriting, alphabet activities, letter writing, play dough, Language Experience, make and do and lots of other things.
This week we are learning about the letter Vv. We will learn its name, its sound, how to write and recognise it and about some things that begin with this letter.
The teachers love planning exciting learning experiences to help us learn our letters.
Today Peyton from Room 3 led us with Susie from Room 5 in Kia Tau and Miss Collins caught it on film. It was wonderful to see the leadership being developed from such a young age.
Today we watched a You Tube Clip about Walruses as part of our Writing. We watched the video one and then we watched it again to gain more information. It was interesting!
Here is the video clip that we watched.
After that, we created a plan with three ideas using pictures. Next we will write about our three points into a story. Watch this space! This will be our first writing on our wall this term!

This week we are learning about the letter Ww. We will learn its name, its sound, how to write and recognise it and about some things that begin with this letter.
The teachers love planning exciting learning experiences to help us learn our letters. Ww is a tricky letter as lots of people get it confused with Mm and it makes different sounds.
In the holidays the Kakano Teachers change the theme of the Learning Centre each term.
This term we have set up the Learning Centre as a Veterinary Clinic. We have hunted out and made things to add to the Clinic so the students can develop their Oral Language skills and social skills. We're not sure who will have more fun? The Kakano Students learning in there or the teacher creating the environment?

We look forward to hearing about your holiday adventures!
As part of our learning we made Zebra biscuits during Language Experience. Miss Collins pre-baked the zebra shaped biscuits so we just had to decorate them (yes it is amazing Miss Collins has a zebra cookie cutter!).
We iced them with white icing and then we stuck licorice stripes on them and a chocolate drop for an eye. When we were decorating the biscuits we remembered that no two zebras have the same stripes like our finger prints.
Here are some photos of our zebra biscuits.
Here is the Basic Biscuit Recipe in case people want make them at home.

Writing About Zebras
This week we are writing factual reports about Zebras.
We used this video to help us learn more about zebras. After that we created a zebra mind map with key ideas on the mind map and we have our word wall to support our writing too.
For our Inquiry this term we have been learning about Sustainability. We worked together and made an Energy Efficient house that saves energy and electricity. To make our house sustainable we learnt about 'double glazed windows', how curtains keep the heat in, how using a heat pump can save power, solar power panels and LED lights. We made everything out of boxes and cardboard. We had an amazing time making this house.
